SUBJECT: Fake blood
DATE: 3/97

I recall a discussion regarding fake body fluids a while back but I wasn't
interested at the time and wasn't paying close attention.

Now I need "blood" for a forensic biology exercise - it needs to look
bloody and type out like usual.

Is there such a thing available? any experiences?

thanks

Tom,

Wards has simulated blood for different kinds of studies. One that they
have for forensics actually has artificial blood in fabric so that students
have to extract samples and then type the blood. It is in the 97 catalog
on page 518.

I would be interested in hearing what else you are doing for your forensic
labs. We are running a summer science institute for high school Jr's and
Sr's and the biology portion of the institute is going to be using biology
and chemistry to solve a murder. This is our first year to include biology
in the summer institute, so we are looking for activities to include also.

Tom,
Ward's markets a fake blood tha't not bad. I used it for blood typing in
our intro bio labs. It's close to the right color. Under the microscope
the coacervates are differently colored to do CBC's.

I have tried Ward's fake blood kits and not been happy with the results. The
agglutination looks like raspberry jam and not very good jam. I had talked with
Colorado Serum Company about developing kits using horse blood but haven't had
time to follow up.

As to Ward's blood... I didn't want to say anything but since Sandy spoke up
I will give my opinion too... I used Ward's blood once and didn't like the
results at all. I felt it was an unrealistic product and very disappointing
compared to working with real blood! Maybe I am just too hard to please!

Carolina Biological Supply sells "aseptic" RBC's which I have used
with the antisera. It works like a charm for blood typing.
