SUBJECT: Collections of original research papers
DATE: 2/97

Biolabbers:
Do you know of collections of significant original research papers in
areas of biology such as biochemistry, genetics, cell biology,
microbiology, and biotechnology. I am looking for books like "Classic
Papers in Genetics," which I used as an undergraduate, and "Milestones
in Microbiology," which is out in a new edition, or even textbooks which
have articles in an appendix, as in my old Herskowitz "Genetics."
Assigning a classic article to my students is much more convenient for
them and for our library staff if the article is in a book in our library rather
than by interlibrary loan from an old journal in some other library.

Thanks for any suggestion.

If you're interested in ecology:

FOUNDATIONS OF ECOLOGY edited by Leslie Real and James Brown from
University of Chicago Press (ISBN o-226-70593-5.

Includes commentary and historical discussion. However, the most recent
paper is from 1974. I guess our science was "founded" by then.

"The DNA Molecule, Structure and Properties" is a collection edited by
David Freifelder (Freeman, ISBN 0-7167-0287-8 in hard cover, 0-7167-0286-X
in paper). Mine is dated 1978, so it may be out of print or in a new
edition, but it's a super collection that picks up where "Classic Papers in
Genetics" leaves off.

There is a nice archive of classic papers in genetics at:

http://www.gdb.org/rjr/history.html

Covers Mendel to the 1920's and contains about a dozen papers. (I believe
that you will need a helper app called Acrobat to look at or print these.)

Also, I see that U. Chicago Press has a new "Foundations of Animal Behavior"
volume, parallel to the ecology collection.
