SUBJECT: Materials for making impressions of stomates

Labbers-
Anyone know what kind of latex is used for obtaining stomatal "prints" from
leaves. Are there any other substances which can be painted onto leaves,
peeled off, and mounted for microscopic examination of stomatal density, etc.?

I am in a plant physiology class right now in college and we used clear
finger nail polish. It worked well. Use a thin coat and it will dry
faster! S.Semmler- Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD

I use clear nail polish for stomatal prints. Paint on a thin coat and
let it dry. You can use cellophane tape to remove the nail polish cast
( a loop of tape with a small sticky end is easy to handle). Apply the
tape to one ed of the painted area and gently peel off the leaf cast.
This works well with most leaves.

The stuff I've used is a product called Nu Skin. It's actually a first aid
paint on bandage. I've found it in pharmacies with no problem, but if you
need info on who makes Nu Skin, just let me know.

We have used white glue that dries clear or clear fingernail polish.
