MEMORANDUM

TO: PRE-PHARMACY ADVISORS

FROM: JAMES W. BARTLING, ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR

STUDENT AFFAIRS AND ADMISSIONS

We send greetings to you from the Southern School of Pharmacy as we begin a new academic year. The Class of 2000 has enrolled with 124 students. Many of these are your former advisees or students. We appreciate your support throughout the past year. The average G.P.A. for the group is 3.39. Thirty-three per cent have earned bachelor's degrees; seventy-two per cent are female. A total of 1000 applications were received for this class.

Our new admissions viewbook is enclosed for your review. The pre-pharmacy requirements are outlined on page 54. Please encourage your advisees to submit their materials as soon as possible for the Class of 2001. We have been accepting applications since May 1st, and personal interviews begin next month. Due to the large applicant pool, the Admissions Committee continues to be very selective. Applicants who are not academically strong may not be competitive and may not be invited for the personal interview. Acceptance for the limited number of positions (120) in the Class of 2001 will be extremely competitive. The Committee will evaluate the applicant's entire record, including PCAT scores, work experience, recommendations, and results of the personal interview. We welcome your comments during the evaluation process.

Our continued success in recruiting and admitting students is directly linked to you. We ask your cooperation once again this year in sending us a list of your pre-pharmacy students or any students who may be considering a health care career. To simplify this request, a form and postage-paid envelope are enclosed for your convenience. We will send each of the students on your list an information packet including the new admissions viewbook. They will also receive a Financial Aid pamphlet. Thank you for your time and effort on your students' behalf.

If there is anything whatsoever we can do to help with your pre-professional advising activities, please do not hesitate to contact us. Dolores Cox (Associate Director), Janet Freeman (Administrative Secretary), and I are available to you. We look forward to working with you during the coming year.
